I recently stayed at the Alambique Hotel in Fundão, Portugal. The standout feature of this hotel is undoubtedly its swimming facilities. The indoor pools, spread across several levels, coupled with the top-notch spa facilities, are truly exceptional. It’s clear that these amenities are the hotel’s best offering. However, the rest of the hotel experience was, unfortunately, average at best. The reception was incredibly busy all day long, leading to long queues and wait times. Even simple tasks like asking for directions to the swimming pool took at least 20 minutes. While the staff was friendly, they seemed overwhelmed by the demand. The rooms were spacious but basic, lacking essential features like electrical outlets. I found myself having to charge my phone in the bathroom, which was inconvenient. For families with early-rising children, the swimming pools’ opening time of 10am posed a challenge. An earlier opening would be much appreciated by families needing to entertain their children in the morning hours. I was perplexed by the mandatory swimming cap rule. When I questioned this, I was met with the unsatisfactory response of “it’s the rules!” I would urge the hotel to review its policies in this regard as they asked my one year old baby to have it on all the time. The most disappointing aspect of my stay was the housekeeping service. My room was entered three times while I was inside, once disturbing my napping 1-year-old baby. When I raised this issue with reception, I didn’t receive an apology, just an “I will check.” The breakfast was average, but the food stations were too small, leading to queues to get food. This is an area that needs improvement. In conclusion, my overall experience was not positive. I would rate this hotel as a 5-star pool and spa housed in a 2-star hotel due to the issues highlighted.
