English Cottage

Unfortunate situation with the owners health as I saw it. I was so excited to try the cottage but left after one day of a seven day stay. Things were well organized on the web as well as great communication in the first email as well as in a small booklet in each room explaining the house. Information was informative and funny at times while also giving background in the owner. However, coming in from dinner on my first night I encountered a woman I had not met yet who startled me as she was sitting in the living room with the only light coming from the dining room next to it. She immediately began to ask me questions about my name and what room I was in which I happily gave her however as is natural in conversation I asked her the same two questions and she didn’t respond. She said something else that I can’t remember and I said yes and then Repeated my two questions concerning her name and room which were the two same she gave me. She told me her name and made a snappy comment about doing the cleaning of the property for the owner and the “books”. I repeated my question about her room noticing that she was being evasive. She said “I stay in one of the rooms here”. I had my hands full do to still unpacking expecting to stay a week but once I got to my room and sat things down I was not satisfied. I walked down back down stairs and simply said that if you ask someone a question but you are not willing to answer the same question it is weird and uncomfortable to others. That night someone tried to get into my room and when I tried to confront them I was locked in? Someone was holding the master key on the other side and I (a grown man was locked in until they let go). It was simply coincidental that I tried to unlock it as they had the key in to come in I know. Meaning they weren’t trying to lock me in let se. However I couldn’t get out all of her and emailed the owner I was so mad at around 1:30. I explained nothing about the night before but stated I was locked in. My first clue something was off with the owner was that he stated that he never checked email except at a certain time during the day in all the other communications and that if we needed him or had a concern to call him and not email. I didn’t call bc I was in no real danger and although he and I had not met yet I knew the owner was elderly. He responds at 3:39 to my email in which I tell him I am locked in my room and he states that he doesn’t understand??? And that he and I will regroup in the morning. Long story longer ….. in the morning he didn’t remember the email. He couldn’t differentiate most of the guest from each other and defaulted to this lady I had concerns about on everything we were discussing. I simply brought another guest that I didn’t know into the kitchen with me as a witness and told him I had concerns that he may be getting taken advantage of from the lady on staff (granted as thorough as the written Communication was (it seems it was all written years ago by him) not one time Tia she ever mentioned. He said I don’t understand again and as I talked he must have said it 10 times. I said I was checking out (stayed 1 day on a paid in full 7 day non refundable trip) and believe he may be in the begging stages of Alzheimer’s or dementia as well as I have concerns of the other staff member and would not contribute to her possibly taking advantage of him. The only thing I didn’t do correctly is I should have expressed my concerns to the local officials and didn’t.
